How I picked my student magazine name

By creating a mind map I was able to have a large spread of ideas for my student magazine name. The final three from the above which I liked for the mast head of my magazine were, Chinese Whispers, The Bell and finally SPLAT!
The reason for me choosing each of the above choices was because, Chinese whispers is a child game which Is played in the class room at school so students will relate with the masthead if chosen. The second one I have chosen is The Bell this has a simple explanation, when the bell rings at school its usually time for a break or school has finished. This is a time for relaxing weather its reading a magazine or talking to your friends when the bell rings it’s time to read the bell.
My finally choice of masthead is SPLAT! I choose this because it’s fun and recognizable.

I ended up choosing the mast head Chinese Whispers for my magazine masthead, because I thought people would remember this easily as when they were young they would have played it during the school class room. And this student magazine I want to make it something which people want to talk about thought the school so this made me think that Chinese Whispers was the correct name for this magazine.

Plan content page design two

This is my second flat plan desgin for my music magazine. I have shown the sections of where i will write text and where i will place my own original photos.

Double page spread deconstrusction

Within this task I had to deconstruct and co-notate the following double page spread. The first thing I noticed when looking at this double page spread was the colours, that have been used for this magazine they have used colours which make you feel relaxed. This includes blue, white and black.
These colours are also male focused which suggests that this is a male magazine. The left hand page of the double page spread has, been covered by a picture of the band. It has a small box in the left hand corner at the bottom, of information which is “NEED TO KNOW” about that band.
This picture takes up a full page it is a long shot and has been taken on a tilt looking down upon the band. This is effective because it shows the band in full view. On the page on the right hand side, there is information on the band.
This information could be an interview, when there gigs are (when there touring) or facts and information on the band members.
This double page spread is not only about this one band that is shown in the picture called “THE TEENAGERS”. It’s also got information on the right page about other bands, so it’s not just covering one band it’s covering a range of stories.
The masthead is the first thing I notice when looking at the page, this is because they have used a large size font and a bright blue background and black text to attract reader’s attention.
The text on the right page has been place on a white background with black text this makes the text easier to read for the audience the magazine is trying to attract.

Double page spread practice

This is my double page spread practice for my student and final magazine. The information on this double page spread is about camera angles and diffrent types of shots that can be taken. This information will help me when i am taking my original photos for my student magazine and my final magazine which is on the musical industry. Both magazine must have my original photography . I have practiced some shot in the double page spread above. The shots i have taken include, Long shot, Medium shot and a Medium Two shot.

Music magazine background

Background of music magazines

Q

Q is a music magazine published monthly in England. The magazine was founded by Mark Ellen and David Hepworth Founders there first impression on Q would be a male music magazine and would target the magazine at an older generation. So they had there own way of connecting with music. The first Q magazine was published in 1986, this magazine had an extraordinary different layout, photography skills and printing. In the early years, the magazine was sub-titled "The modern guide to music and more". Originally the creators of the magazine wanted it to be called Cue (as in the sense of cueing a record, ready to play), but the name was changed so that it wouldn't be mistaken for a snooker magazine or a performing arts (drama) Magazine.

NME
The New Musical Express (better known as the NME) is a popular music magazine in the United Kingdom which has been published weekly since March 1952. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, which first appeared in the November edition. The magazine's commercial heyday was during the 1970s when it became the best-selling British music magazine. NME is still popular today, the magazine has taken on a indie/rock theme now which, was not the genre the magazine started with, when first created.

Kerrang!
Kerrang! was first published on 6 June 1981, edited by Geffo Barton. The magazine was formed on the genre of rock and heavy mental. It was made to inform people about, the music and what it’s about. And how this genre can relate to so much.
The band which was place on the first cover ever made for this magazine was AC/DC, who where one of the biggest heavy mental bands when this magazine was first produced. The Kerrang! magazine was produced in England. This makes it a britsh magazine.

Cam- its a newer one, its not really got a permanant name at the moment, we refer to it as the bloc party song as it sounds abit like that, will be recorded this month so it needs a name soon!

Who writes the songs?
Cam- jack (guitarist) will usually come up with a few guitar riffs and bring them round to my house, liam (bass) will come if hes not busy, i will put some drums to the guitar, and bass gets put to it, then ben will come round for the next practis and put some words to it

Whts the best thing about being in a band?

cam- just being able to mix a hobbie with your best friends, recording music is really fun but nothing can beat playing live!

What made you decide that you want to be apart of a band?
Cam- both of my brothers have been in bands from a young age, was really into their bands so i thought id learn an instrument to be like them

If you had to vote for a member of your band todo something crazy in frount of an audience who would you choose to do it?
Cam- probley jack, out of us hes probley the quietest, it would be surprising...yet hilarious

How did you come up with the name celler gohst?

Cam- we were all in my room drinking after a band practice, thinking of a name, we were drinking stella, and we wanted somthing ghostly, so we thought of stella ghost...which then turned into cellar ghost as it made alot more sense

Where do you see your self this time next year as a band?

Cam- i hope that we have played both the festival and bestival, and gigging the south coast regularly, we dont really know what the members will be doing next year so will see when it comes to it! i think its achievable also, we are all really into it at the mo, so we need to keep the motivation high!

Band interview for magazine

Sundown city interview

Sundown City are a three-piece indie pop band with influences including mod-revivalists The Jam and modern indie-scenesters such as The Wombats. This year has already been a big one for the band, having appeared at the IW Festival and Bestival, not to mention a few headline slots at The Studio, Newport.Their EP, New Line, was released in June 2009 at the IW Festival and has had a great reception among local acts and the radio.Lovable charisma and an energetic stage presence is a huge part of a Sundown City gig.The mix of bouncy, catchy, sing-a-long tunes and louder, raw and in-your-face music will guarantee a memorable live performance, the band promise.

What’s your favourite song?

Simmo- I couldn’t really say that I had a favourite song, I enjoy every song we play. Because everyone’s different and I enjoy them all in different ways.
Jack- I agree with Simmo, everyone song we play has a different meaning and prospective which makes everyone individual

Who writes the songs?
Tom- we don’t really have a pacific person who writes the songs, we just play around with different beats and as a group we create a sound which we like and after we have found the right sound the lyrics just kind of flow.

What’s the best thing about being in a band?
Simmo- Well were all really good friends and we found something we all love, which we can do together for a laugh.
Jack- I just love being apart of something which is such a great hobby and such a good laugh.
Tom- I enjoy showing and audience what we can do if we work together it makes me feel wonderful inside when I see people dancing and singing along with the music we have created for fun!

What made you decide that you want to be apart of a band?
Jack- I didn’t really decide to be apart of a band, it just happened. We all really enjoy playing instruments and by making our own way of showing what we can do to people is a fantastic experience.

If you had to vote for a member of your band todo something crazy in frount of an audience who would you choose to do it?

Simmo- *laughs* great question, I’d probably say Jack, just because when we play live he pulls stupid faces anyway and I think he’d most likely be up for anything . . . . aren’t you??
Jack- *Laughs* Cheers mate.
Tom- Yeah, I completely agree with Simmo, Jack *Laughs*

How did you come up with the name sundown city?
Simmo- I don’t know really, we started off with another name, but didn’t give the impression we wanted it too. So we changed it to Sundown City.

Where do you see your self this time next year as a band?
Tom- well I think we have done so well so far and I’d be happy to still be where were are now, but we definitely want to make an album. We have started making it now, we recorded 6 songs.
Simmo- Yeah I think the albums a good target to head for.
